October is...

October is "Adopt a Shelter Dog" month.

This seems like the perfect opportunity to shed some light on a face that doesn't get a whole lot of attention on this blog. Our pound pup, Ella!

Ella has made a few cameos on here, but nothing substantial (and in her opinion, nothing truly worthy). We adopted Ella bear from the Humane Society of Boulder Valley when we were living out west. She has been nothing short of a good time and sometimes a little more than we think we bargained for.

To us, Ella is family. She had a rough (ruff...) start of her life. We adopted her when she was 1 and 1/2 years old. She just turned 4 at the beginning of September. We learned at the shelter that she came from Kansas and that she had been left behind in the backyard when her family moved without her. A neighbor took her in and soon after, brought her to the Humane Society. Thankfully, in a no-kill shelter, she ended up on rotation and her next stop was Boulder, CO! As understandable as it may be that Ella's original family bit off more than they could chew in dog ownership or whatever the circumstances in their lives, it breaks my heart to know this loyal little girl was left behind by people she trusted and loved.

She is spoiled rotten these days. She hikes mountains, rides on boats, lounges around the house, and has Christmas tree ornaments made in her honor. We remind ourselves often that the best way to love our dog is to treat her like one...but that doesn't stop us from letting her sleep in our bed. We do follow a few rules that really seem to help with general obedience (no table scraps in particular!)

We couldn't imagine our lives without her. If you are thinking about getting a pet, do your research and check out your local pet shelter or search the internet for dog rescues in your area. You will be amazed at what you can find. Cheers to many more years with Ella!
